- The Nakamura-za is destroyed in a fire.
- Philipp Franz von Siebold's Manners and Customs of the Japanese in the Nineteenth Century is published.
- Publishers' Associations (toiya nakama) are abolished, and censorship duties pass from representatives appointed by the publishers to minor officials appointed by the shogunate.
- The first of the Tenpô Reforms are put into place.
- Tokugawa Ieyoshi becomes the last shogun to make a formal visit to Nikkô Tôshôgû. His journey is depicted in numerous kawaraban publications.
- An envoy from Tsushima journeys to Pusan and formally requests a Korean embassy be sent - only so far as Tsushima, and not to Edo - in recognition of the accession of Tokugawa Ieyoshi as shogun in 1837.
