Battle of Ueno

Edo castle was handed over to Imperial troops peacefully. However, many of Bakufu retainers disagreed former Shogun Yoshinobu and Katsu's decision. Those Bakufu retainers formed Shogitai corp and they gathered at Kan-eiji temple.

Omura Masujiro the commander of the Imperial troops announced that the attack against the Shogitai will take in May 15. As the result, almost half of the Shogitai members deserted before the date.
