Battle of Ueno
Black Gate

Edo castle was handed over to Imperial troops peacefully. However, many of Bakufu retainers disagreed former Shogun Yoshinobu and Katsu's decision. Those Bakufu retainers formed Shôgitai corp and they gathered at Kan-ei-ji temple.[1]

Omura Masujiro the commander of the Imperial troops announced that the attack against the Shôgitai will take in May 15. As the result, almost half of the Shôgitai members deserted before the day.

The battle started at Black gate[2] of Kan-ei-ji where 450 Shôgitai members guarded. The Imperial troops attacked from front of the gate and behind the temple. And 13 cannons that set inside of Kaga han residence[3] attacked inside of Kan-ei-ji directly. The Shôgitai was destroyed in a day.

The Black gate has been moved to Eitsu-ji, Arakawa ward.
