• 1886/1/28 A formal Convention of Japanese Immigration is signed with Hawaii, retroactively covering the immigrants who traveled to Hawaii the previous year.
• 1886/4 A temporary "Japanese [Crafts] Village," where artisans in traditional clothing demonstrate traditional craft techniques and designs, is established in Sydney, Australia. Others are established in at least six other Australian cities between July 1886 and July 1887.
• 1886/10 Meiji Gakuin University is established.

• Andô Tarô replaces Nakamura Jirô as Japanese Consul in Hawaii.
• Bunkio Matsuki leaves for China.
• Three prefectures are combined to form Hokkaidô-chô, or "The Department of Hokkaidô."
