- Keiô 2/12 (Jan) Fukuzawa Yukichi's "Seiyô Jijô" is published, and very quickly sells 150,000 copies.
- Keiô 2/12/5 (10 Jan) Tokugawa Yoshinobu becomes the 15th Tokugawa Shogun.
- 1867/1/9 Emperor Meiji succeeds to the throne.
