- Tazaki Sôun, Mori Kansai, Kanô Eitoku Tatsunobu, Morizumi Tsurana, Hashimoto Gahô, Shibata Zeshin, and Takamura Kôun, along with several craftsmen, are selected to become the first Imperial Household Artists (Teishitsu gigeiin).
