  • 1683/5/17 The courtesan Yamatoya Ichinojô and her lover Goze no Chôemon commit suicide together in Osaka. Shortly afterward, inspired by the attention this event attracted among the populace, the first "love suicide" play (shinjû) to ever be performed on the kabuki stage is organized and performed.
