Kakizaki Yoshihiro changes his surname and establishes the Matsumae clan.
Upon the orders of Maeda Toshinaga, construction begins on the inner moat of Kanazawa castle, overseen by Takayama Ukon.
The Manchu language becomes a written language, adopting the Mongolian script.

1599/int. 3/3 Maeda Toshiie dies.
Shimazu clan retainer Ijuin Tadamune is murdered within the Shimazu daimyo's residence.
Chosokabe Motochika dies and is succeeded by Morichika.
Raku Dônyû is born (d. 1656).
Painter Sumiyoshi Jokei is born (d. 1670).
