Tenpô 12 (天保十二年)

Philipp Franz von Siebold's Manners and Customs of the Japanese in the Nineteenth Century is published.
Publishers' Associations (toiya nakama) are abolished, and censorship duties pass from representatives appointed by the publishers to minor officials appointed by the shogunate.
An envoy from Tsushima journeys to Pusan and formally requests a Korean embassy be sent - only so far as Tsushima, and not to Edo - in recognition of the accession of Tokugawa Ieyoshi as shogun in 1837.
