  • Other Names: Emperor
  • Japanese: 蟠龍丸 (Banryuu-maru)

The Banryû-maru was a steam yacht, according to some sources a pleasure craft, given to the Tokugawa shogunate by James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin in 1858 as a gift from Queen Victoria. Originally known as the Emperor, it was later renamed Banryû-maru.[1]

Following the Meiji Restoration, the Banryû-maru came to be controlled by the Republic of Ezo. In the 1869 Battle of Hakodate, it sank the Imperial Japanese Navy vessel Chôyô-maru.
