• 1838/12/8 Ôno Uchû of the Shinsengumi is born (d. 1911).
• An official from Satsuma han resident in Ryûkyû dies. Claiming fears that the ship carrying his body home to Satsuma might go off course and be discovered by Chinese, thus revealing Satsuma's relationship with the kingdom, Ryûkyû successfully requests to bury the samurai in Ryûkyû.
