Kanbun 3 (寛文三年)

The first Chinese investiture envoys since the fall of the Ming Dynasty arrive in Ryûkyû. The king of Ryûkyû, and his officials, are granted permission to maintain Ming ceremonial costume; they are not obligated to adopt Qing costume. The post of ukwanshin bugyô (Magistrate of Receiving Investiture Envoys) is established.
Dutch East India Company trading post in Ayutthaya is closed.
An earthquake strikes the Kansai region, severely damaging many of the structures at Nijô castle.
Emperor Go-Sai abdicates in favor of Emperor Reigen.
The Ryûkyû court stops using Ming-style buzi status badges.
Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna reissues the Buke Shohatto proclamations.
Shimazu Ryûkyû Gunseiki, a gunkimono account of the 1609 invasion of Ryûkyû, is compiled.
