- 1779/1 Shogunate bans the circulation of nanryôni (pure silver) coinage, beginning the circulation of gold-silver alloyed coins.
- 1779/10 Sakurajima erupts.
- 1779/11/9 Emperor Kôkaku succeeds Emperor Go-Momozono to the Imperial throne.
