William Ten Rhyne

William Ten Rhyne was the first university-trained physician to serve on Dejima. It is said that upon his arrival in Japan in 1673, he helped nurse the ill Emperor back to health. Rhyne is also credited with writing the first description of acupuncture in a European language.
