- Emperor Go-Sai takes the throne.
- Zen monk Ingen (Yinyuan Longqi) arrives in Japan.
- Niiro Hisaaki is named the first Ryûkyû no kata by Satsuma han, a new official position charged with watching over activities and events in Ryûkyû.
- Peasants are forbidden from moving to the chief urban areas (Shuri, Naha, Tomari, Kumemura) of Okinawa.
- Shibata castle is built.
- Shô Tei, Crown Prince of Ryûkyû travels to Beijing, and turns in the royal seal given the kingdom by the Ming Imperial Court, receiving a Qing royal seal and reconfirmation of his father, Shô Shitsu, as King of Ryûkyû.
- The Tamagawa channel is built in Edo to meet increasing demand for water.
