- 1838/3/10 The Nishi-no-maru residence of former shogun Tokugawa Ienari, within Edo castle, burns down. Reconstruction efforts on the Naka-oku and Ô-oku are given precedence over the reconstruction of the Omote areas. Kanô Seisen'in is placed in charge of overseeing the replacement of the fusuma and other interior paintings.

- 1838/12/8 Ôno Uchû of the Shinsengumi is born (d. 1911).
- An official from Satsuma han resident in Ryûkyû dies. Claiming fears that the ship carrying his body home to Satsuma might go off course and be discovered by Chinese, thus revealing Satsuma's relationship with the kingdom, Ryûkyû successfully requests to bury the samurai in Ryûkyû.
