  • Adherents of the Fuji-kô sect first begin building mini-Fuji in Edo.
  • Works by Katsukawa Shunrô, the artist who will later be known as Hokusai, are published for the first time.
  • Rangaku scholar Hiraga Gennai is arrested and imprisoned for killing a disciple of his in a fit of rage.
  • The shogunate establishes the geisha kenban, and all geisha of the Yoshiwara are registered.
  • Isaac Titsingh becomes opperhoofd in Dejima.
