- Japanese: 林氏 (Hayashi-shi)
The Hayashi served as retainers to Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period. During the Edo period which followed, many became important advisors to the Tokugawa shoguns. Hayashi Hôkô passed on his post as director of the shogunal Shôhei-kô school to his son, establishing it as hereditary.
