Grave of Sakakibara Masaharu at the Nanshû Cemetery in Kagoshima.
  • Died: 1877/5/10
  • Japanese: 榊原 政治 (Sakakibara Masaharu)

Sakakibara Masaharu was a retainer of Shônai han and student at the Kagoshima Shigakkô (Satsuma Army Cadet School) who fought and died in the Satsuma Rebellion.

Although not a retainer of Satsuma han, Masaharu was permitted to enter the Satsuma Army Cadet School in 1875. When the Satsuma Rebellion broke out in 1877, he was given the opportunity to simply return to Shônai. He decided to remain and to fight for Satsuma; injured in the battle of Mifune, he died in a hospital at Nobeoka on 1877/5/10 and was buried at the Nanshû Cemetery in Kagoshima.
