- HMS Alceste and Lyra arrive in Ryûkyû; among the crew, commander Basil Hall and Herbert John Clifford, who begins researching the Okinawan language.
- A system of fire signals located atop mountains, which could be lit to signal Edo in the event of the incursion of a foreign ship into Nagasaki harbor, established in 1809 and never used, is officially abolished.
- The Yoshiwara burns down.
