  • Japanese: 佐屋街道 (Saya kaidou)

The Saya kaidô, or Saya highway, was a short detour from the Tôkaidô. It connected the Tôkaidô post-stations of Miya-juku and Kuwana-juku via a shorter boat trip than the more typical, but more dangerous, journey via Shichiri-no-watashi.

Both Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi and the Meiji Emperor are among those who employed this shortcut.
