Emperor Murakami reigned from 946 to 967, and is known for appointing no regent (kanpaku), thus weakening the power of the Fujiwara clan at court.

He was a grandson of Fujiwara no Mototsune and succeeded his older brother Emperor Suzaku in 946. Murakami was then succeeded in turn by one his sons, who took the throne as Emperor Reizei in 967.
