Shimazu Tetsumaru was a son of Shimazu Nariakira. In conjunction with Nariakira's nephew Shimazu Tadayoshi succeeding him as lord of Satsuma han on 1858/12/28, the shogunate obliged Tadayoshi to adopt Tetsumaru as his heir. Tetsumaru died several days later, however, on 1859/1/2. He is buried alongside his father and siblings at Fukushô-ji in Kagoshima.
