Utagawa Toyoharu

Utagawa Toyoharu was an ukiyo-e painter and print designer, considered the founder of the Utagawa school of ukiyo-e. He is also often said to have marked the turn in ukiyo-e towards landscapes and large crowd scenes.

His students included Utagawa Toyokuni, Toyoharu II, Toyohiro, Toyohisa, and Toyomaru.

Though originally from Kyoto, Toyoharu relocated to Edo in 1766.
