Utagawa Toyoharu was an ''[[ukiyo-e]]'' painter and print designer, considered the founder of the [[Utagawa school]] of ''ukiyo-e''. He is also often said to have marked the turn in ''ukiyo-e'' towards landscapes and large crowd scenes.
His students included [[Utagawa Toyokuni]], [[Utagawa Toyoharu II|Toyoharu II]], [[Utagawa Toyohiro|Toyohiro]], [[Utagawa Toyohisa|Toyohisa]], and [[Utagawa Toyomaru|Toyomaru]].
Though originally from [[Kyoto]], Toyoharu relocated to [[Edo]] in [[1766]].
