Emperor Go-Horikawa was an emperor of the Kamakura period who came to the throne in 1221 following the Jôkyû Disturbance, in which an attempt by Retired Emperor Go-Toba to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate was defeated.
His predecessor, Emperor Chûkyô was forced to abdicate the throne and was exiled along with his father Emperor Juntoku, grandfather Go-Toba, and several others involved in the uprising. Go-Horikawa, a nephew of Go-Toba, then acceded to the throne. He took Fujiwara no Chôshi as his consort.
In 1232, Go-Horikawa abdicated in favor of his son, who took the throne as Emperor Shijô.
