Tanaka Mitsuaki was a Meiji period statesman, who served for a time as Imperial Household Minister. He is said to have been a devoted worshipper of the Meiji Emperor, and commissioned a lifesize statue of the late Emperor in 1912 to be produced, and gifted to the Emperor's widow, the Empress Dowager Shôken. That statue is today in the collection of Meiji Shrine.
