- Edward Sylvester Morse returns to Japan for a number of months, and then returns to the US.
- Five Okinawan students - Ôta Chôfu, Jahana Noboru, Takamine Chôkyô, Nakijin Chôban and Kishimoto Gashô - are sent to Tokyo as the first prefectural scholarship students.
