1684/6/5 Ihara Saikaku composes 23,500 verses of renga poetry in a single 24-hour period at the Sumiyoshi shrine in Osaka.

Qing Dynasty forces seize Taiwan, ending the rebellion of the Ming loyalists. The Qing Court lifts bans on trade in ports in southern China.
The shogunate cracks down on yomiuri news-singers, forbidding them from singing the news in the streets, and banning the production of their news-papers. The ban is not very successful, though, as it is repeated again in 1698, 1703, 1713, 1721, and 1722.
