Other Events of 1684
- The shogunate cracks down on yomiuri news-singers, forbidding them from singing the news in the streets, and banning the production of their news-papers. The ban is not very successful, though, as it is repeated again in 1698, 1703, 1713, 1721, and 1722.
- The Qing open Customs Houses in select ports, implicitly granting permission for merchants to engage in overseas trade.
