- 1623/2/15 The shogunate declares that ronin and chônin may not live in daimyo's estates.
- 1623/7/27 Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada abdicates in favor of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
- 1623/int.8 Territory under the Imperial Household is expanded by 10,000 koku to roughly 20,000 koku.
- 1623/11 British East India Company factory at Hirado is closed; British leave Japan.

- Amboyna massacre in Dutch East Indies; twenty men in the service of the British East India Company are executed by the Dutch East India Company.
- The third diplomatic mission from Ayutthaya arrives in Nagasaki, and travels to Kyoto, where the embassy is received in audience by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu and his retired father Tokugawa Hidetada, at Fushimi castle.
- Gima Shinjô sends two young Okinawan students to China to study sugar processing. Sugar cane plantations first begin to take off.
