1740/9/4-5 Ceremonies are held at Daitoku-ji in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of Sen no Rikyû.

The shogunate orders a number of officials to study the Dutch language.
Nanatsumen, one of the Kabuki Jûhachiban, is debuted.
At least 86 ceremonies are held by members of the Omotesenke school of tea ceremony in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of Sen no Rikyû. The Urasenke and Mushanokôji Senke schools hold ceremonies as well.
