Sun Yi was active as a painter in Fuzhou in the late Ming / early Qing Dynasty periods (early to mid-17th century).

He is known to have trained a number of notable Ryukyuan painters, including Ishimine Denbaku (Hu Ziqian), Uehara Shinchi (Cha Binxin), and Yamaguchi Soki (Wu Shiqian). In addition, a number of Sun Yi's paintings are known to have made their way to Ryûkyû, and three "birds and flowers paintings" are said to have been stored or displayed within Shuri castle.
