Cornelia van Nijenroode was the daughter of a Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant by a Japanese courtesan, born on Dejima but raised in Batavia.

Following the death of her first husband, a VOC official, she married Johan Bitter, a lawyer who robbed her of her wealth.
