- 1798/5/1 Shogun Tokugawa Ieharu views from his beach palace a whale which, following torrential rains in previous days, had become disoriented and made its way into Edo Bay.

- Ryukyuan Chinese-style music, known as uzagaku, is performed at Nagoya castle as part of a Ryukyuan embassy to Edo. The musical instruments used are presented as a gift to the lord of Nagoya afterwards.
