- Buke Shohatto is reissued with some changes; the 1683 form is repromulgated several times over the course of the remainder of the Edo period with few changes.
- Chinese investiture mission arrives in Ryûkyû; Shô Tei is formally invested as King of Ryûkyû.
- Qing Dynasty puts an end to the rebellion of Ming loyalists based on Taiwan.
- Shogunate prescribes the maximum size for wakizashi and katana, marking the end of the Kanbun-Shintô period of swordmaking.
- Tenshû and yagura of Matsuyama castle (Bitchu) which remain today are built.
- The shogunate arrests more than 300 illegal prostitutes in Edo, sending them to the Yoshiwara, denying them pay for five years.
