Matsukata Kôjirô was a one-time head of the Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation, and prominent art collector. His collection of European paintings and sculpture forms the core of the collection of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. A Northern Song Dynasty (possibly Xi Xia) sculpture of Guanyin today prominently displayed at the Honolulu Museum of Art also derives from Matsukata's collection.
