Titia Blumhoff

Titia Blumhoff, wife of Dutch East India Company Factor Jan Cock Blumhoff, became in 1817 (along with her child's wet-nurse) the first European woman to visit Japan. She remained in Japan for less than four months before being deported by the shogunal authorities. However, during that time, she produced hundreds of paintings, etchings, prints, dolls, and other writings and sketches, and was herself painted by Nagasaki-based painters including Kawahara Keiga.
