Living National Treasures are visual and performing artists recognized by the Japanese national government for their preeminence in their art form, and for their contributions in maintaining traditional culture. The designation was first established in 1953.
Selected List of Living National Treasures
- Hamada Shôji (1894-1978) - ceramics artist[1]
- Hayakawa Shôkosai V (1932-2011) - bamboo artist; designated 2003.[2]
- Kamakura Yoshitarô (1898-1983) - katazome textile artist; designated 1973.[3]
- Kinjô Jirô (1912-2004) - Okinawan pottery; designated 1985.[4]
- Taira Toshiko - Bashôfu (banana fiber textiles); designated 2000.
