The National Academy of the Ryûkyû Kingdom, based on the model of that in Beijing, was the highest educational institution in the 19th century kingdom.

Established in 1798 and named the "National Academy" in 1801, the school was staffed chiefly by scholars from Kumemura. A shrine to Confucius was established on the grounds in 1837.
