• Construction and establishment of Chinese quarter in Nagasaki is formally completed.
• The keizuza system of recording and tracking the geneologies of the aristocracy is established in Ryûkyû.
• Matsuo Bashô makes a journey to the northern parts of Japan, upon which his Oku no Hosomichi ("The Narrow Road to the North") will later be based.
• The Treaty of Nerchinsk establishes the border between Russia and Qing Dynasty China.
