- The main keep of Nijô castle is destroyed by lightning.
- Miyagawa Chôshun is commissioned to contribute to restoration efforts at Nikkô Tôshôgû. Chôshun is not paid for his efforts, and in the ensuing scuffle, the son of the Kanô painter who commissioned him is killed. Chôshun is then exiled from Edo for one year.
