Emperor Go-Sanjô was an emperor of the Heian period.
A son of Emperor Go-Suzaku and Princess Teishi, and grandson of Prince Sanjô, he took the throne in 1068 upon the death of his half-brother Emperor Go-Reizei. Go-Sanjô was more distantly related to Sesshô and Kanpaku families such as the Fujiwara clan than many of his recent predecessors; some historians note this as marking the beginning of a decline in the power or influence of the Sesshô and Kanpaku families.[1]
Fujiwara no Norimichi served as kanpaku (regent) throughout Go-Sanjô's reign.
Go-Sanjô was succeeded in turn by his son, who took the throne in 1072 as Emperor Shirakawa.
