- Kansei 8/12 Ryukyuan embassy sojourns in Edo, and then returns to Ryûkyû.

- Publication begins on the multi-volume Ehon Taikôki (completed 1802).
- Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai remarries (his first wife died sometime in 1793-1797) and first takes on the name "Hokusai".
- The HMS Providence is shipwrecked near Miyako Island.
