Shigehide was the son of Suzuki Sadayû. He was sent to join the defenders of the Ishiyama Honganji who were fighting Oda Nobunaga and there gained fame for his skill at leading arquebusiers. He later served Hideyoshi in the same capacity and fought in Korea. He is sometimes said to have fought at the battle of Sekigahara on the side of Ishida Mitsunari but this is impossible to confirm.
