+1. '(insert person's name) joined Shinsengumi'. You should say 'joined '''the''' Shinsengumi.'
+2. '(insert person's name) participated (or fought) Ikedaya affair'. You should say 'in the Ikedaya affair' or at battle of blablablah'.
