A fortification was first built at Utsunomiya in the late [[Heian period]]. An early modern castle was then built on the site in the early [[Edo period]], with [[Honda Masazumi]] becoming lord of the castle in [[1619]].
The castle grounds extended roughly 900 meters north to south, and roughly 850 meters east to west.
