Makino Narisada was a lord of [[Sekiyado han]]. He brought [[Nagasaki interpreters|Nagasaki interpreter]] [[Nakano Giken]] into his service so Nakano could teach him [[Chinese language|spoken Chinese]]; through personal connections with [[Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu]], Makino and Nakano both participated in Chinese-language salon meetings run by Yoshiyasu and [[Ogyu Sorai|Ogyû Sorai]].
