Sendai castle was the chief residence of the [[Date clan]] lords of [[Sendai han]], and the chief administrative center of that domain.
The castle suffered a fire in [[1855]]/7 which destroyed the ancestral mausoleum of the Date clan, a structure known as the In'enden.<ref></ref>
