Tôyama Sokukun was a [[Tokugawa shogunate]] official active during the [[Bakumatsu period]].
A ''[[metsuke]]'' as of [[1847]], he was later promoted to ''[[kobushin bugyo|kobushin bugyô]]'' and then in [[1852]] to ''[[sakuji bugyo|sakuji bugyô]]''. In [[1857]], he was reassigned to ''[[ometsuke|ômetsuke]]''. The following year he was named ''[[dochu bugyo|dôchû bugyô]]''. In [[1860]], he was then named ''Nishinomaru rusui'', and two years later, ''hata bugyô''.
Over the course of his career in these many positions, Sokukun played a role in a wide variety of administrative and governmental projects and tasks, including the reception of the [[1850]] [[Ryukyuan embassy to Edo]]; the ''[[shumon aratame|shûmon aratame]]'' census of religious registration; construction and repair projects at [[Zojo-ji|Zôjô-ji]] and elsewhere; and offering his opinions on how the shogunate should handle or respond to formal [[Commodore Perry|diplomatic overtures from the United States]].
